An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, this is the only professional qualification that is accepted worldwide. The requirements include in-depth lactation education, at least 1,000 clinical hours and passing the board exam. Due to the extensive training and clinical hours, IBCLC's can deal with all breastfeeding issues within their scope of practice. For example prescriptions, tongue tie releases and osteopathy bodywork will be referred to an appropriate professional, unless the IBCLC has additional qualifications.

Pain during and post feeds

Poor or slow weight gain

Perceived low milk supply

Blocked ducts

Can usually be attributed to position and attachment, if there are no other factors, the above issues will start to resolve once this is corrected.

Unfortunately Lactation Consultants are not currently covered by private health insurance in the UK. 

There is a variety of options based on what works best for the client and what the needs are. Prior to the appointment you will be sent an in-depth questionnaire and consent form, please fill this in and return it at least 24 hours before the appointment. This is then reviewed so that this doesn't detract from the appointment time. Depending on the consent agreed to, the appointment will include examination of the baby (postnatal only), and examination of the breasts and nipples. Following the examination I will observe a feed , then discuss my findings with you, including any changes to your breastfeeding practices, recommendations and a plan of care will be agreed upon. There is ample time for questions and demonstrations during the appointment. I will then conduct a follow up call in 48-72 hours, a written report will then be sent to you, the GP, referring specialist.

Yes, your health visitor will be able to support you and also signpost you to local peer supporting groups, breastfeeding drop in cafes or clinics. Child centres and some hospitals also have drop in sessions, a list should be in your baby's red book.
