What is the difference between an IBCLC and other breastfeeding professionals? An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, this is the only professional qualification that is accepted worldwide. The requirements include in-depth lactation education, at least 1,000 clinical hours and passing the board exam. The table below by Lactation Consultants of Great Britain explains the differences in more detail.
-
What kind of issues can an IBCLC help with?Due to the extensive training and clinical hours, IBCLC's can deal with all breastfeeding issues within their scope of practice. For example prescriptions, tongue tie releases and osteopathy bodywork will be referred to an appropriate professional, unless the IBCLC has additional qualifications.
-
Do you perform tongue tie releases?I am not a tongue tie practitioner, however if during the assessment I suspect a tongue tie. I work with two paediatric consultants who perform this at Paediatric Diagnostics in Crawley.
-
Do you accept private health insurance?Unfortunately Lactation Consultants are not currently covered by private health insurance in the UK.
-
What are the most common problems you see? Most of the common breastfeeding issues such as: Sore or damaged nipples Pain during and post feeds Poor or slow weight gain Perceived low milk supply Blocked ducts Can usually be attributed to position and attachment, if there are no other factors, the above issues will start to resolve once this is corrected.
-
Are there any free options for more support?Yes, your health visitor will be able to support you and also signpost you to local peer supporting groups, breastfeeding drop in cafes or clinics. Child centres and some hospitals also have drop in sessions, a list should be in your baby's red book. La Leche League, NCT, ABM, BfN all offer support and counselling for free National Breastfeeding Helpine 0300 100 0212 is open 24/7, throughout the year.
-
I only have a little bit of milk, can I still breastfeed? There's a saying that 'where there's milk there's hope'. This would depend on what has caused this amount of milk, the IBCLC will conduct a thorough assessment and medical history to identify any causes. Depending on the cause it may be possible to increase the supply with: -Increased skin to skin - Increased expressing or feeding - The use of galactogues - these are herbs, food and medicine that is believed to increase milk supply -Positioning and attachment -Usage of a nursing supplementer system In some cases you may need to supplement with alternative milk sources, such as donor breastmilk or artificial formula. The IBCLC will discuss all options with you after an in-depth assessment.
-
Where do the appointments take place? There is a variety of options based on what works best for the client and what the needs are. We offer home visits in Greater London, SW Essex, and West Sussex, for other areas please contact to discuss. Paediatric Diagnostics is a specialist paediatric clinic in Crawley, appointments are available here in addition to tongue tie releases and any additional tests required. We also offer video consultations and virtual support options.
-
What happens during an appointment?Prior to the appointment you will be sent an in-depth questionnaire and consent form, please fill this in and return it at least 24 hours before the appointment. This is then reviewed so that this doesn't detract from the appointment time. Depending on the consent agreed to, the appointment will include examination of the baby (postnatal only), and examination of the breasts and nipples. Following the examination I will observe a feed , then discuss my findings with you, including any changes to your breastfeeding practices, recommendations and a plan of care will be agreed upon. There is ample time for questions and demonstrations during the appointment. I will then conduct a follow up call in 48-72 hours, a written report will then be sent to you, the GP, referring specialist.

What happens if I choose to withhold consent for sharing information during my consultation with Baby Care Consultancy? At Baby Care Consultancy, your comfort and choice are our top priorities. If you choose to withhold consent for sharing information during your consultation, please be assured that the consultation can still proceed. However, we do recommend sharing relevant information as it may be necessary for providing the best possible treatment, tests, or further management that may fall outside the scope of practice for an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Transparency and open communication can enhance the support and care you receive, ensuring that both you and your baby get the appropriate attention needed. Remember, our goal is to offer you the highest level of care and support during your visit.
