Michelle IBCLC Lactation Consultant

Hello

My name is Michelle, I’ve been a paediatric nurse for 21 years. Throughout my career, I have supported families with breastfeeding in a range of settings such as A&E, paediatric wards, post natal wards, community clinics and in their home. I qualified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant IBCLC this year, which is the highest qualification in breastfeeding support (for further explanation see the FAQ section).

My Story

I’m a wife and mother of two angel babies and two rainbow babies, I struggled with breastfeeding with both of my daughters. Pre covid there was more support post delivery I remember having colostrum harvested by one of the midwives and received a lot of support, however after discharge the issues increased and mixed feeding followed. Like many families I watched videos online and on social media and was filled with lots of incorrect information. I persevered through the agony of breastfeeding until my daughter's mouth got bigger. Breastfeeding became enjoyable and I realised that breastfeeding isn't supposed to hurt and weaned her suddenly at a year, due to work commitments. Of course this resulted in mastitis and 4 weeks of antibiotics.

Fast-forward to rainbow baby two who was born very small (2.015kg) in a post covid world. Due to staff shortages, the breastfeeding support was non existent and I was advised to give formula so I began mixed feeding. Again I persevered through the excruciating feeds knowing that eventually her mouth will grow, we started exclusive breastfeeding and 2 years later she’s still going.

Why I became an IBCLC

After these two experiences I made the decision to not moan about the problem but to be a part of the solution, so I began my Lactation Consultant training and as the study days progressed I realised how I had been set up to fail. This became my motivation to succeed and make a difference to lactation education and support.

Breastfeeding is simple but it’s not always easy, my aim is to assist you on your journey in an evidence based, friendly and non judgemental way.  Once you agree on what your goals are, we will plan the care together. Regardless of how you choose to feed your baby I’m here to help, advise and support you to make an informed decision that works for you, your baby and your family.
